About the exam

The Reserve Bank of India Services Board recruits officers in Grade 'B' (Direct Recruit, on probation) in the General, DEPR and DSIM cadres. This page is the General cadre. Advertisement RBISB/DA/01/2026-27 (29 April 2026) was for Panel Year 2026: 40 General vacancies, with applications from 29 April to 20 May 2026. A candidate must be 21 to 30 years old on 1 April 2026 (born not earlier than 2 April 1996 and not later than 1 April 2005), with the relaxations in the notice, and needs a graduation with 60% marks (50% for SC/ST/PwBD where the posts are reserved) or a post-graduation with 55% (a pass for those reserved categories). General and EWS candidates who have already appeared six times in Phase-I for this post cannot apply again.

Phase-I is one online objective paper of 200 marks, held on 13 June 2026. The information handout sets four tests, each on its own clock: General Awareness (80 questions, 80 marks, 25 minutes), English Language (30 questions, 30 marks, 25 minutes), Quantitative Aptitude (30 questions, 30 marks, 25 minutes) and Reasoning (60 questions, 60 marks, 45 minutes), 120 minutes in all. Every question has five options and one right answer. A wrong answer takes away one-fourth of the marks of that question; a question left unanswered scores nothing. Tests other than English are in Hindi and English, and the language can be switched during the test. The Board fixes minimum marks for each test and for the total; only those who reach both are shortlisted for Phase-II. If Phase-I is held in more than one session, corrected scores are equated. Marks are reported to two decimal places.

Phase-II, held on 25 July 2026 for those shortlisted, has three papers and 300 marks, and is not a single objective test, so there is no Phase-II practice paper here. In the morning shift, Paper-III (General Finance and Management) has 30 objective questions for 50 marks in 30 minutes, then a descriptive part of 50 marks in 90 minutes: six questions are set and four are to be answered (two of 15 marks, with a 600-word limit, and two of 10 marks, with a 400-word limit). In the afternoon, Paper-I (Economic and Social Issues) has the same objective-then-descriptive shape, and Paper-II (English writing skills) is descriptive, three questions, 100 marks, 90 minutes. Objective and descriptive parts cannot be moved between, and a wrong objective answer again costs one-fourth of that question's marks. Papers other than English are bilingual; Hindi answers may be typed in Inscript or Remington (GAIL). Candidates are then called for interview on the Phase-II aggregate. Final merit adds Phase-II and the interview. Phase-I marks do not enter that merit list.

Selected General-cadre officers join on probation for two years, which the Bank may extend up to four, and may be posted anywhere in India. The notice gives a starting basic pay of ₹78,450 a month in the scale ₹78,450–4,050(9)–1,14,900–EB–4,050(2)–1,23,000–4,650(4)–1,41,600, and initial monthly gross emoluments of about ₹1,54,936 without house rent allowance.

Paper-III is the morning shift. Paper-I and Paper-II are the afternoon shift, one after the other.

The detailed syllabus is in Appendix II of the advertisement. The topic lists above follow that scheme. The Appendix II PDF on rbidocs.rbi.org.in could not be opened on 16 October 2026 (the server returned 403), so the topic wording should be checked against that PDF.

The advertisement provides for an interview after Phase-II, and for a personality assessment before the interview that carries no marks. The interview's mark is in Appendix II and is listed under toVerify because that PDF could not be opened.

How it is scored

Phase-II is out of 300: Paper-I and Paper-III are 100 each (50 objective and 50 descriptive) and Paper-II is 100. On the objective parts, a wrong answer takes away one-fourth of the marks assigned to that question, and an unanswered question scores 0. The handout says the 30 objective questions carry differing marks that add to 50. If those marks are only 1 and 2, the only split that totals 50 is 20 questions of 2 marks and 10 of 1 mark, and answering all of them wrongly would be −12.5; that split is not printed as a table in the handout, so the −12.5 floor is that reading. Descriptive marks are taken as 0 to the paper's descriptive total. The Board reports objective scores to two decimal places. Shortlisting for interview uses the Phase-II aggregate, which the Board sets against the number of vacancies. There is no Phase-II practice test here, because the papers are half descriptive and are not a small objective test.

Tips to clear RBI Grade B

  1. Banking and the Reserve Bank

Learn each instrument by what it does to liquidity: repo and MSF inject it, reverse repo and a sale of securities absorb it. Keep CRR (cash with the Reserve Bank) apart from SLR (liquid assets the bank itself holds).

  2. Economic concepts

Write the identity before choosing: fiscal deficit is total expenditure minus receipts other than borrowing; primary deficit is fiscal deficit minus interest; revenue deficit uses only the revenue account.

  3. Constitution and governance

For a finance question, start from the article: money bill 110, annual financial statement 112, Finance Commission 280, Consolidated Fund 266, Contingency Fund 267, GST Council 279A. A statutory body such as the Reserve Bank is not in the Constitution.

  4. History, geography and institutions

Tie each institution to its Act and its job, not to who heads it: SEBI to the securities market (Act, 1992), IRDAI to insurance, PFRDA to pensions, NABARD to rural credit. Skip office-holders and this year's figures.

  5. English: reading comprehension

Underline the line that answers the question and reject an option that adds a fact the passage never states. For vocabulary, use the sentence around the word, not the meaning you know from elsewhere.

  6. English: cloze

Read the whole paragraph once, then test the words on both sides of the blank. A contrast (but, yet) and a cause (because, so) usually decide the blank before the grammar does.

  7. English: error spotting

Find the subject of the verb and ignore the noun nearest the verb if a phrase such as 'along with' or 'as well as' stands between them. Then check tense, article and preposition.

  8. English: paragraph rearrangement

Pick the opening sentence first: it names the subject and does not begin with a pronoun or with 'however'. Then join the pair that a pronoun or a time word forces, and only then look at the options.

  9. English: vocabulary

Read whether the question wants a synonym or an antonym before you look at the options. The opposite is often sitting there as a trap.

  10. Arithmetic

Write the one equation the story gives (part/whole, together-rate, or alligation) and solve it before estimating. For simple interest, interest = principal × rate × time / 100, with time in years.

  11. Data interpretation

Read the unit in the table heading before any division. For a percentage change, the base is the earlier figure unless the question says otherwise.

  12. Number series

Check a constant difference first, then a growing difference, then a multiplier (×2, ×3, or ×n + something). Test your rule on two steps, not only the last.

  13. Simplification and quadratic comparison

For a quadratic, factor or use the formula and list both roots. Compare every root of x with every root of y; if the sign is not the same for every pair, the relation cannot be fixed.

  14. Puzzles and seating

Draw the row or the floors and place the fixed clue first (an end, floor 1, or 'only one seat between'). Do not fill a name until two clues force it.

  15. Syllogism

Draw three circles. 'All A are B' puts A inside B, so 'some B are A' follows. 'Some A are B' and 'some B are C' do not force 'some A are C'.

  16. Inequality

Combine only symbols that face the same way. A > B ≥ C gives A > C. The moment a link is missing or the signs oppose each other, mark that pair as not definite.

  17. Coding and decoding

Write the alphabet positions under the letters. Check a shift (+1, +2, reverse) on the first and the last letter before you recode the whole word.

  18. Verbal reasoning

For blood relations, rewrite the sentence from the speaker's side ('her mother's brother' is a maternal uncle). For directions, use a plus for north and east and subtract when the path turns back.

Officer in Grade B (DR), General cadre

Officers in the General cadre work across the Reserve Bank's functions and may be posted anywhere in India. The 2026 notice listed 40 vacancies in this cadre. Probation is two years, extendable to four. The notice's description of the work is on the Bank's opportunities page. Official page

DEPR and DSIM cadres

The same advertisement also recruits officers in the Department of Economic and Policy Research and the Department of Statistics and Information Management. Those cadres have a different scheme of selection (Appendix III) and are not the examination described here. Official page

Still to be confirmed

  • Appendix II (https://rbidocs.rbi.org.in/rdocs/content/pdfs/DEPR29042026_A2.pdf) returned 403 on 16 October 2026, so the syllabus wording and the interview mark could not be read from that PDF. The Phase-II topic lists follow the scheme that advertisement points to; check them against Appendix II.
  • The Phase-II handout says the 30 objective questions carry differing marks totalling 50, and does not print how many are of 1 mark and how many of 2. The −12.5 floor assumes only those two values, which forces 20 questions of 2 marks and 10 of 1 mark. Confirm the mix on Appendix II or the English handout.
  • The English Phase-I handout PDF is on rbidocs and was not opened (the same host returned 403). The question counts, timings, five options and one-fourth penalty are from the Hindi handout on rbi.org.in, which states them.
  • Phase-I has no topic-wise syllabus in the notice or the information handout. The practice questions use the usual scope of those four tests.
  • The interview's maximum mark is not in the pages that could be opened. It is left out of the scoring scales until Appendix II is read.
